ABOUT
Nidiya Kusmaya is a visual artist based in Indonesia, whose interdisciplinary practice bridges craft, art, and science. With a foundation in textile craft and design, she delves into the exploration of alternative pigment sources, utilising a diverse array of waste materials—including food scraps, agricultural by-products, building material remnants, mining residues, and microorganisms. By transforming these discarded elements into sustainable colorants, Nidiya seeks to extend the lifecycle of materials and reimagine our perception of waste.
Her work is deeply rooted in the contexts of environmental sustainability, particularly addressing the significant contribution to water pollution through synthetic dyes. Through meticulous research and experimentation, she develops natural pigments applicable to various surfaces, notably paper and textiles. By doing so, she aims to introduce colour into our lives in ways that honor ecological balance, and the narratives embedded within these materials.
